Matters, matter management in Irys One
Matters is matter management in Irys One. The documents, conversations, notes, tasks and drafts for a case, deal or project live in one place, and the AI already has that context when you ask it something.
Included with every Irys plan.
More than a folder
Most tools treat a matter as a place to put files.
When the matter is only storage, the work goes on somewhere else, and so does everything that knows about the work.
The to-do list lives outside the platform
The tasks that actually run the case end up in a separate document, which is the one place your tools cannot see.The work is spread across tabs
Drafting in one place, research in another, the file itself in a third. Every move between them is a step you pay for.The AI has no idea any of it is connected
Ask a question and you first have to rebuild the case for it, attaching documents and pasting context it should already hold. One surface
Everything the case is made of, in one view.
A matter opens on what has actually been happening, not on a file count.
Documents
Every file the case touches, with its own folder in the Library created for you.
Conversations
The AI chats about this case, kept with the case rather than in a separate history.
Notes and checklists
Meeting notes, research notes, client calls and checklists, written where the case lives.
Tasks
What is outstanding, who owns it and when it is due, each one linked to the thing it came from.
Drafts
Work in progress stays attached to the matter instead of sitting in someone's downloads folder.
Ask Irys
Ask about the case, not about your files.
Ask Irys sits on every matter and is already scoped to it, so there is nothing to attach and nothing to paste.
It already has the case
The documents, conversations, notes and instructions for this matter are loaded before you type. The answer is drawn from the case.Hand it to Workbench when it gets bigger
A question that turns into a piece of work opens in Workbench with the same matter context already in place.Instructions your firm sets once
How the AI should behave can be set for the organisation, a workspace or a single matter, and the narrower instruction wins. What it works with
The matter is the centre of gravity.
Library is the system of record underneath it. Sign takes agreements out and files them back. Workbench is the agent you hand a task to.
Questions
What is a Matter?
A Matter is the unit of work in Irys, the place for everything related to a case, deal, or project: documents, conversations, notes, tasks, drafted documents, and analysis results. Every tool and feature in the platform connects back to the Matter.
What's new in Matters?
Panels now show last-activity previews and context action buttons. A new Tasks panel is added. The Matter header gains Status, Due Date, and Assignee fields. A floating AI chat window scoped to the matter is always available on the page.
What is the Pinned Reminder?
Each Matter has one Pinned Reminder, a single user-editable status message that acts as the "headline" for anyone looking at the matter. It appears both on the Matter card in your list and as a banner on the Matter detail page. Any Matter member can set or replace it.
What is the Tasks panel?
Tasks is a new panel for lightweight work tracking within a Matter. Each task has a title, optional assignee, optional due date, status (To Do / In Progress / Done), an optional free-form label (e.g., "Urgent," "Waiting on OC"), and an optional link to a document, chat, or note in the Matter.
What are task labels?
Labels are free-form text tags on individual tasks that provide priority signals. The system suggests commonly used labels (including "Urgent," "Waiting on OC," "Waiting on Client," "Partner Review," "Filing Deadline," and "Court Deadline") based on what you and your team have used before. Labels are scoped to the individual task.
Where can I see all my tasks across Matters?
To access Tasks across all Matters, select the "Task" option beneath "Matters" on the left panel. It shows an urgency summary (overdue, due today, active), grouping tasks into "Needs Immediate Attention" and "Coming Up." You can filter by matter, status, or label. Tasks also show a "Suggested Practice Tool" badge, a one-click launcher into the right tool with Matter context already loaded.
What are context actions on panels?
Panel items now show action buttons like "Open in Drafting Assistant," "Compare with…," "Send for Signature," and "Start New Analysis." These launch the relevant Practice Tool with the Matter context pre-loaded, so you don't need to manually attach documents or set context. Tool outputs auto-link back to the Matter.
What is the floating AI surface?
Every Matter detail page has a floating "Ask Irys" chat window scoped to that matter. It automatically has access to all the matter's documents, chats, notes, tasks, and AI instructions, with no manual attachment needed. Quick questions happen in the floating surface; heavier work can expand into the full Workbench with Matter context pre-loaded.
How does AI context work within a Matter?
The AI inherits a cascading set of instructions: Org-level instructions → Workspace-level instructions → Matter-level instructions → individual chat context. This means a Workspace set up for litigation (e.g., "Always cite Texas Rules of Civil Procedure") passes that context down to every Matter and chat within it automatically.
Can I view all my Matters in a table instead of cards?
Yes. The Matters list page offers two view modes: Cards (the default grid of Matter cards) and Directory (a sortable table with columns for Name, Client, Practice Area, Status, Assigned Attorney, Tasks, Docs, Last Activity, and Actions).
What happens to my existing Matters?
Nothing changes structurally: your Matters, documents, and chats all carry over. You'll see the same panel layout, now with smarter panels. Tasks, status fields, and the floating AI surface are additive.
