What is Sign?
Sign is the electronic signature module in Irys. You bundle one or more documents, say who has to sign, send it, follow where every agreement stands, and the signed document comes back to the matter it came from.
How do I send a document for signature?
Click Send for signature to open one sheet, and start it from Sign, from a matter, or from Workbench.
- Name the request, then choose documents from your Library or upload a file.
- Add each signer with Add someone else.
- Mark where each signature or date belongs, and who it belongs to.
- Set an expiry (14 days by default), then click Send it. Send stays disabled until every signer has at least one spot.
Does the other side need an Irys account?
No. Each recipient gets an email with a link to the request, reads the documents and signs from there, and can download or print at any point. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
Where does the signed document go?
Back to the matter the request was sent from, so the executed agreement sits with the work that produced it. Every party to the agreement receives the signing record as well.
Can I send a signature request from Workbench?
Yes. Ask Workbench to send a document for signature and it hands back a signature request for you to check and edit. Nothing goes to anyone until you press Send.
How do I know whose move it is?
Agreements are grouped by whose move it is: Your move, or with the other side, worked out from where the agreement currently stands rather than set by hand. Signed agreements sit apart. The Your move and Waiting on them views cut the whole register the same way.
Are signatures made with Sign legally recognized?
Electronic signatures are recognized under the federal ESIGN Act and, at state level, under UETA, adopted in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Sign is built to ESIGN as the stricter of the two: consent is taken in full before anything is signed, and every party receives a signing record. Some categories, including wills, family law matters, and court orders, sit outside the framework under federal law. Whether a particular document can be signed electronically depends on the document and the jurisdiction, so check anything specific with your own counsel.
