When evaluating legal research AI tools, lawyers should assess several dimensions. First, what is the tool's approach to accuracy? Does it use retrieval-augmented generation to ground output in verified sources? Does it verify citations? Does it distinguish between reliable and unreliable output? Second, what is the coverage of the underlying legal database? Even the most sophisticated AI cannot find cases it does not have access to. Third, how does the tool handle jurisdiction-specific research? Legal rules vary dramatically across jurisdictions, and the tool must respect these boundaries.

Additional evaluation criteria include security and confidentiality protections (critical for maintaining attorney-client privilege), integration with existing workflows (particularly Microsoft Word and document management systems), transparency of AI reasoning (so lawyers can evaluate the quality of the analysis), and pricing structure (per-seat, usage-based, or enterprise licensing).
