Irys (formerly Iqidis) vs PerplexityA cited answer is not a verified authority.
Perplexity is an excellent way to find out. Irys is built for what happens next: the matter, the authorities behind the draft, and the file that leaves the firm.

At a glance
Irys and Perplexity are both AI tools lawyers use, but Perplexity is a general answer engine that cites the web pages it read, while Irys is legal infrastructure that keeps the matter and reviews the authorities behind its output. Perplexity publishes $17 per month billed annually for Pro and $34 per seat per month billed annually for Enterprise Pro; Irys One is $299 per month with source-linked output, citation review and no per-token or per-query overage on the advertised plan. Many firms reasonably run both rather than choosing one exclusively.
Perplexity
Who Perplexity is for
Perplexity is an answer engine.
You ask a question, it searches, and it returns a written answer with inline citations to the pages it read. For fast orientation on an unfamiliar subject, that is a genuinely good way to work, and it is why so many lawyers already have it open.
Its paid tiers add premium data sources and route questions across several frontier models rather than one, which makes it a strong general research companion.
It is a research assistant for the open web, not a legal platform. It does not hold your matter, and the citations it shows are the pages it quoted, not authorities it has checked.
Verified pricing
Verified pricing: what is public and what is not
Perplexity publishes its prices.
Its individual plan is $17 per month billed annually, its top individual plan is $167 per month billed annually, and on the business side $34 per seat per month billed annually and $271 per seat per month billed annually. A further security and governance tier is quoted rather than listed.
Note what sits behind the enterprise price. Configurable file retention on enterprise plans; the retention controls are listed as contract required. The governance controls a firm would want are therefore contract terms to negotiate, not plan features to switch on.
Irys One is publicly listed at $299 per month, with no per-token or per-query overage on the advertised plan. Irys Teams is $329 per seat per month for 2 to 25 attorneys. There is a 7-day trial with no credit card.
On sticker price, Perplexity is cheaper, and nothing here pretends otherwise. The comparison that matters is what each subscription takes responsibility for when the work is billable.
Perplexity
What Perplexity does better
Speed to an orientation.
For an unfamiliar industry, a counterparty, a regulator or a technical term, it is quicker than reading five pages yourself.
Citations by default. Every answer shows the sources it drew on, which is a far better habit than a chat window that asserts without showing anything.
Breadth of sources and models. Paid plans add premium business data sources and route questions across several frontier models. Its pricing page also lists 400+ app connectors on paid plans.
A real free tier and published enterprise terms, which makes it easy to try before anyone signs anything.
Perplexity
Why a cited answer is not a verified authority
This is the distinction the whole page turns on, and it is not a criticism of Perplexity: it is a description of two different jobs.
Its answers carry inline source citations, and no legal citator is stated on its own pages. A citation tells you where a sentence came from. A citator tells you whether the authority behind it is still good law, whether it has been reversed, distinguished or superseded. The second question is the one that ends careers when it goes unasked, and an answer engine does not claim to answer it.
Perplexity reads the open web. Case law behind a paywall, the court's own docket, and the firm's prior work on the same issue are not in its reach, and an answer that looks complete can be complete only over what it could see.
Check the security scope for yourself rather than taking the summary tier at its word. Its own security page states SOC 2 Type 2 certification and GDPR compliance, and it describes HIPAA-aligned safeguards, which is a different statement from a HIPAA certification. We found no ISO 27001 claim on its own pages as of the review date, which is a statement about their pages and not about their practice.
Irys
What Irys does differently
Irys keeps a persistent, source-linked representation of each matter: the documents, facts, people, dates, authorities and drafts.
The next task picks up where the last one ended, rather than starting from a fresh question box.
Output is source-linked and Cite Check reviews the authorities behind it, so the answer carries not only where a statement came from but whether it still stands.
Research and drafting happen in the same matter workspace, and a Word add-in brings that work into the document where lawyers actually finish it. Built-in electronic signature covers execution without another subscription.
Workbench connects to applications such as Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, Sheets, Outlook, OneDrive and Slack, and can prepare documents and email drafts across them, with user approval rather than sending or changing anything on its own.
The infrastructure around the models is Irys's own: agentic orchestration, structured matter intelligence and evaluation infrastructure built to plan and carry multi-step legal work. In Irys's internal evaluations on published legal benchmark tasks (Irys internal testing, July 2026), the Irys system scored above leading frontier-model baselines on legal work. Methodology available on request.
The honest summary: Perplexity is excellent at finding out. Irys is built for producing the work product afterwards, and for standing behind it.
Matter
Test both on the same matter
Do not decide this on marketing pages, including this one.
Take one real matter and run the same work through both tools, then answer these questions.
Decide
How to decide
Plenty of firms will keep both, and that is a sensible stack: an answer engine for finding out quickly, a legal platform for the matter and the work product.
Choose Perplexity when the priority is fast, cited orientation across the open web at a low price. Choose Irys when the output has a client's name on it: matter context, verified authorities, drafting and finished files.

The Irys offer
One published price. No per-token or per-query overage.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can Perplexity be used for legal research?
It is useful for orientation and it shows its sources, which is a better habit than an uncited chat answer. Its answers carry inline source citations, but no legal citator is stated on its own pages, so it does not tell you whether an authority is still good law, and it reads the open web rather than the full body of case law. Irys output is source-linked and Cite Check reviews the authorities behind it.
How much does Perplexity cost compared to Irys?
Perplexity publishes $17 per month billed annually for Pro, $167 per month billed annually for Max, $34 per seat per month billed annually for Enterprise Pro and $271 per seat per month billed annually for Enterprise Max, with a further security and governance tier quoted rather than listed. Irys One is $299 per month with no per-token or per-query overage on the advertised plan, and Irys Teams is $329 per seat per month for 2 to 25 attorneys, with a 7-day no-card trial. On sticker price Perplexity is cheaper; the comparison that matters is what each subscription is responsible for.
Is Perplexity secure enough for client matters?
Read its own security page rather than a summary. It states SOC 2 Type 2 certification, GDPR compliance and HIPAA-aligned safeguards, which is a different statement from a HIPAA certification, and we found no ISO 27001 claim on its own pages as of the review date. It also states that it does not train on enterprise customer data. The retention and access controls a firm would want are listed as contract terms on the enterprise tiers, so confirm them in writing before privileged material goes through it.
Does Perplexity keep matter context the way Irys does?
Perplexity offers projects and memory on paid plans, but they are not matter-scoped: there is no structured record of a matter's documents, facts, people, dates, authorities and drafts that a later task can build on. Irys keeps exactly that, which is why the second task on a matter does not start by re-explaining the first.
Should a law firm replace Perplexity with Irys?
Not necessarily. Perplexity remains a fast, cheap way to orient on an unfamiliar subject, and the two tools answer different questions. Irys is built for the matter itself, research, drafting, citation review and finished work product, which is the part an answer engine was not built around.
Did Iqidis change its name to Irys?
Yes. Iqidis rebranded to Irys in 2026. The company, team and platform are the same; only the name changed, so any older reference to Iqidis describes this same product.
Other comparisons
Except where a statement is expressly labeled as Irys internal testing, this comparison is based on publicly available information reviewed on October 13, 2026, and on Irys's current product positioning. “Not publicly listed” means no standard public price or term was found on the vendor's official materials as of that date; actual pricing, features, and contract terms may vary and may require particular plans, content subscriptions, or integrations. Product capabilities on both sides change frequently; confirm current details with each vendor before making a purchasing decision.
