The AI agent in Irys One

Asking Questions

Workbench understands natural language: ask the same way you would ask a colleague. No special syntax or keywords required.

Typing a question

Enter your question in the input bar and press Enter or click send. Effective questions:

  • "Summarize the key obligations of the buyer under this purchase agreement."
  • "Does this contract contain a non-compete clause? If so, what are its terms?"
  • "Compare the liability caps in the two uploaded vendor agreements."

Where the mode you're in produces citations, every claim that rests on a source carries a small number right after it, and you can open that source without leaving the answer. See Checking a citation below.

Pick the mode that fits the question

How deep the answer goes, and how its citations come back, depends on the mode you're in. Quick gives a fast, direct answer; Standard returns a memo-quality report with aggregated citations; Thorough runs a full investigation and cites each claim inline. Glance at the mode selector before you send. See AI Modes.

Sharpen a prompt with Amplify

If a question is broad or you're not sure you've framed it well, use Amplify (the sparkles icon) to expand and refine it before sending. You can review and edit the amplified prompt first. See Amplify Prompt.

Uploading documents for context

You can upload documents directly into the conversation for immediate analysis:

01

Attach files

Click the paperclip in the input bar or drag and drop files into the chat, including a whole ZIP. Supported formats include PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, emails, images, CSV, and TXT.

02

Ask your question

Once the files finish processing, type your question. The AI uses the uploaded documents as context for its answer.

03

Check the citations

When the mode produces citations, each claim carries a numbered source you can open at the cited passage in your own uploaded file.

Matter-aware queries

When you work inside a Matter, Workbench already has every document in that matter's library, so there is no need to re-upload. Ask broad questions across the whole set:

  • "What termination rights does the landlord have across all lease agreements?"
  • "Identify any clauses that reference arbitration in the uploaded contracts."

The AI works across all matter documents and returns answers with numbered citations back to the file and the passage they came from (when the mode produces them).

Checking a citation

Never rely on a cited claim without reading the source. The answer gives you three ways in.

01

Hover the number

A card shows the source, the case name and cite where there is one, and the passage the claim relied on.

02

Click the number

The Sources & Citations panel opens with that citation highlighted. Sources from your own files are listed first, with the date and the quoted text. Every other source is grouped and labelled by kind, for example Web or Case Law, with a link out.

03

Open your own file at the sentence

For a citation to one of your documents, click Open. The file opens beside the chat with the cited passage highlighted, so you land on the sentence rather than the file.

The count at the top of the panel says how many citations came from how many sources. Search citations filters to the ones that mention a word. Copy citation under any citation copies that one, and Copy All at the top copies the lot.

The answer ends with the list of authorities it relied on, in citation form. Sources under the answer reopens the panel at any time.

A citation tells you where a reading came from. It is not a judgement that the reading is right for what you are deciding. Open the source and read it.

Finding the right passage

Irys looks for both exact-term and conceptual matches in your documents, so the relevant passage surfaces whether you use the document's wording or a synonym. You don't need to phrase your question the way the document is written.

Show Thinking

For a deeper question, and especially in Thorough mode, expand the Show Thinking panel to follow the investigation as it runs. It surfaces the Key Issues the AI is pursuing, the leads it runs in parallel, and the facts it extracts along the way, so you can see not just the conclusion but how it got there.

Show Thinking is especially useful when you want to verify the AI's reasoning or understand why a particular source was or was not included.

Working with the answer

Any answer can be downloaded as PDF or Word (DOCX) or copied straight out. To keep the ask that produced it, click the Save icon under the message you sent: Save to My Desk opens on the Prompts tab with your message already filled in. See My Desk.
