Asking Questions
The AI Assistant understands natural language — ask the same way you would ask a colleague. No special syntax or keywords required.
Typing a question
Enter your question in the input bar and press Enter or click send. Effective questions:
- "Summarize the key obligations of the buyer under this purchase agreement."
- "Does this contract contain a non-compete clause? If so, what are its terms?"
- "Compare the liability caps in the two uploaded vendor agreements."
Where the mode you're in produces citations, the response references the specific page numbers and paragraphs from your documents so you can verify every claim.
Pick the mode that fits the question
How deep the answer goes — and how its citations come back — depends on the mode you're in. Everyday gives a fast, direct answer; Deep Research returns a memo-quality report with aggregated citations; Agent runs a full investigation and cites each claim inline. Glance at the mode selector before you send. See AI Modes.
Sharpen a prompt with Amplify
If a question is broad or you're not sure you've framed it well, use Amplify (the lightning bolt) to expand and refine it before sending. You can review and edit the amplified prompt first. See Amplify Prompt.
Uploading documents for context
You can upload documents directly into the conversation for immediate analysis:
Attach files
Click the paperclip in the input bar or drag and drop files into the chat. Supported formats include PDF, DOCX, TXT, and images.
Ask your question
Once the files finish processing, type your question. The AI uses the uploaded documents as context for its answer.
Review citations
When the mode produces citations, the response references the specific pages and paragraphs from your uploaded documents, so you can trace every statement back to its source.
Matter-aware queries
When you work inside a Matter, the AI Assistant already has every document in that matter's library — no need to re-upload. Ask broad questions across the whole set:
- "What termination rights does the landlord have across all lease agreements?"
- "Identify any clauses that reference arbitration in the uploaded contracts."
The AI works across all matter documents and returns answers with document-level and page-level citations (when the mode produces them).
Finding the right passage
Irys looks for both exact-term and conceptual matches in your documents, so the relevant passage surfaces whether you use the document's wording or a synonym. You don't need to phrase your question the way the document is written.
Show Thinking
For a deeper question — and especially in Agent mode — expand the Show Thinking panel to follow the investigation as it runs. It surfaces the Key Issues the AI is pursuing, the leads it runs in parallel, and the facts it extracts along the way, so you can see not just the conclusion but how it got there.
Show Thinking is especially useful when you want to verify the AI's reasoning or understand why a particular source was or was not included.
Working with the answer
Any answer can be downloaded as PDF or Word (DOCX), kept with Save this output to Notes in My Desk, or copied straight out.
