Template fields in Irys Workbench

Template fields are the placeholders that stand in for everything which changes between one use of a document and the next. They are what lets a single template serve every client and matter.

How fields get created

You do not type them. When you ask Workbench to turn an agreement into a template, it reads the document and replaces each name, date, amount and deal term with a field, leaving the clause structure and numbering around them untouched.

Tell it what counts as a field in your ask. "Every name, date, amount and deal term" is a good default; add anything specific to your practice, such as notice periods or governing law.

The field format

Fields come back in double brackets, for example [[EMPLOYEE_NAME]]. That is the format Workbench picks on its own.

If your team uses a different convention, ask for it. "Use [Single Brackets]" or any other style you name will be followed.

The field guide

Alongside the template you get a manifest: every field, what belongs in it, and an example value. The chat also lists the fields by group, such as parties, dates, payment terms, reference, release and carve-outs.

Read it before you use the template. It is the fastest way to catch a deal term that was left hard-coded when it should have become a field.

Filling a template

01

Start from the template

Continue in the same chat where it was built, or click the paperclip in a new chat and search for the template by name.

02

Give it the new facts

Name the parties, the dates and the terms for this deal, and say what to keep from the original.

03

Read what it used

The filled document comes back as a Word file. Workbench lists the values it put into each field and tells you what it still needs from you.

04

Confirm before it goes out

Check the items it flagged, then add the document to your Matter or send it on.

A worked follow-up: "Now fill the template for a new separation: Jordan Reyes, last day October 2, 2026. Eight weeks' base pay, paid within 10 business days after the Effective Date. Keep every other term from the original. Give me the filled agreement as a Word file, and list anything you still need from me."

Writing a good ask

  • Say what becomes a field. The more specific you are about what varies, the fewer hard-coded terms survive.
  • Say what to keep. Clause structure, numbering and defined terms stay put when you ask for them.
  • Say what you want back. A Word file, plus the field list, in the same ask.
  • Say what to keep from the original when you fill it, so unchanged terms carry through untouched.

If something is off

  • The text came back all bold. Some Word files return with every paragraph bold or the spacing tight. Fix the style in Word, and tell us which file it was.
  • A field was missed. Point at it in the chat and ask for it to become a field. The template is rebuilt rather than hand-edited.
