Tasks
Tasks live inside a Matter and answer one question — "what's next on this Matter?"
Add a task
Open the Tasks panel
On the Matter dashboard, find the Tasks panel.
Click Add Task
A title field appears inline. Type the task title.
Set optional fields
Inline fields for assignee, due date, and label.
Save
The task appears in the list. Toggle status by clicking the checkbox or status pill. Add sub-tasks via the indent button or + Add sub-task beneath a parent.
Add tasks from an AI conversation
After an AI Assistant conversation about a Matter, the AI can propose next steps as tasks. One click adds the suggested tasks to the panel; you can edit assignee, due date, and label before saving.
What a task has
| Property | Required | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Yes | Short description of the task |
| Assignee | No | One Matter member. Defaults to the creator. |
| Due date | No | Date only. Overdue tasks highlight in red. |
| Status | Yes | To Do → In Progress → Done. Three states. |
| Label | No | Free-form tag. Typeahead suggests: Urgent, Waiting on OC, Waiting on Client, Partner Review, Filing Deadline, Court Deadline. |
| Linked item | No | A document, chat, or note in this Matter. Clicking the link opens the item. |
| Created by / Created at | Auto | Tracked for audit |
Sub-tasks
A task can have sub-tasks. Sub-tasks are checkboxes only — title and a complete/incomplete state. They don't have their own assignee, due date, or status. The parent task carries all real properties; sub-tasks decompose the work. One level of nesting only.
The parent task's progress reflects sub-task completion. When all sub-tasks are checked, Irys One suggests marking the parent as Done but doesn't auto-complete it.
Priority via labels
The panel uses three signals to convey what's urgent, instead of formal priority levels:
| Signal | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Due date | When |
| Status | Where (To Do / In Progress / Done) |
| Label | Why it matters now |
Every Matter task is visible to every Matter member — Tasks are a shared view of the Matter's work.
The cross-Matter Tasks page
A dedicated Tasks page in the left sidebar aggregates every task across every Matter in the active Workspace. Each row shows: status checkbox, title, the Matter the task belongs to, assignee, label, and due date.
Header
A search bar, a Matter filter dropdown, status tabs (Active / All / Done), and a + Add Task button sit at the top. A short summary line shows the current state — for example, "1 overdue · 2 due today · 18 active."
Two urgency tiers
The body groups tasks into two tiers so the most time-sensitive work is always on top:
| Tier | What it contains |
|---|---|
| ⚠ Needs Immediate Attention | Overdue tasks and tasks due today |
| → Coming Up | Everything else with a due date in the near future, plus undated tasks |
Suggested Practice Tool badges
Some tasks include a small badge suggesting the Practice Tool that fits the task — AI Chat, Sign, Drafting, Research, or Compare. Click the badge to launch the tool with context pre-loaded.
Scope
